Recycle Your Christmas Tree

The Chip-a-Tree program allows Broward County residents to bring holiday trees to a park, where they are chipped and used for landscaping throughout the park system. There is a limit of two trees per vehicle, artificial trees are not accepted, and no commercial vehicles or garbage trucks are allowed. All decorations must be removed from the trees.

This year, the program runs daily through January 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at these designated locations: Brian Piccolo, C.B. Smith, Delevoe, Easterlin, Fern Forest, Markham, McTyre, Plantation Heritage, Quiet Waters, Snake Warrior¹s Island, Tradewinds, Tree Tops, T.Y., and West Lake. The Division recycled nearly 17,500 trees last year, representing 219 tons that otherwise would have gone to landfills. Call 954-357-8100 for additional details.

Recycle Holiday Cards

In Christmas past, the Miami Herald's Action Line column responded to a question concerning organizations that accept and recycle used Christmas cards. Action Line advised that St. Jude's Ranch for Children in Boulder City, Nevada accepts used greeting cards from all occasions, including birthdays, Easter, Chanukah, sympathy.  BUT St. Jude's Ranch is no longer accepting cards.

The only local organization specifically mentioned making use of used greeting cards is the Boys and Girls Club of Miami, which uses the cards for arts and crafts projects, in its after-school progams.  Address is 2805 SW 32nd Ave., Miami, and phone number for more info is 305-446
